Today I have mainly been drinking beer.

I’m reading The Trial right now so I took today out to sit on Kafka’s grave while reading it. Unfortunately Jewish cemeteries are closed on the Sabbath so I came here instead to write this.
Last night was Legends again, terrible place but amusing karaoke watching to be done, especially Gail with her operatic style take on eighties rock ballads and everyone singing Stones songs because its Mick’s 60th birthday and he’s in Prague to play a gig tonight.
Gail won the competition (no competition) but was at this point asleep on the table so I got to drink a good deal of her jug of long island ice tea. I should have gone to the Roxy at this point to jump up and down to techno but having been ripped off for the beers at Legends I couldn’t afford it. So I went to Blind eye with Chels & her friends, felt sick, went to bed.
Meanwhile, there are two random Irish guys apparently staying in our house. Not sure where they are supposed to be sleeping, but they seem nice enough.

Twas my birthday yesterday – I am now officially 24, so woo.
I drank lots of beer and Jameson’s at Blind Eye and ate some seriously good munch at bar polo. All was good and so forth.
Jamie and Jackie have gone off agin, didn’t see that much of them as they were having a couple-ly weekend. Good luck and Cao to them if they are reading.

Hmmm… little else going on. Russ told me a good joke:
A man is walking down the street when he sees another man with an orange instead of a head. Immediately he stops him to ask; “why do you have an orange for a head?”
The man says “well, I rubbed a magic lamp and a genie came out and said I could have three wishes. First I wished for a beautiful wife and immediately I had one. Then I wished I had 50 million pounds. Immediately I had piles of money all around me”
“So,” said the first man, still confused, “what was your third wish?”
“I wished that I had an orange for a head.”

Its been a funny 24 hours.

Firstly, last night Jamie and Jackie from back in Southampton turned up in the Blind Eye without warning, a bit strange but great to see them again. They’re only here for a few days but we’ll show them the sights. maybe. I also got pissed out of my tiny mind last night as Hanna had the idea of drinking wine before we went to the pub.
Then today I got up and spent 2 hours scrubbing the flat clean.. at which point Jacques turned up and paced around my bedroom shouting at me for not cleaning it well enough. I really think he has some serious mental problems.. no wonder he couldn’t find anyone else to live with after being in Prague 6 years. I, fortunately, maintained a zen-like calm and will later taint his food.
Then on the way over here Bea finally phoned and told all about how they are doing over in Holland. Alright, apparently, though they only got jobs on Friday.
Finally just got an e-mail from Matt, informing me that his girlfriend from 4-5 years ago, Alica, has died in a car crash. Very sad news.

On Thursdays I get up at 6.40am. I brush my teeth, get some clothes on, go downstairs and make myself some scrambled eggs on bread with a large mug of coffee. I eat / drink this breakfast, listen to the world service (unless it’s in Czech), put on my shirt and tie and leave the house with my notes. I catch the tram to Zelivskeho (without a ticket) then get the metro to Pankrac (with a ticket). Once in Pankrac it is approaching 8am. I wait until it is actually 8 (3 mins or so), walk inside the Peugeot building, tell the doorman ‘Dobré rano, jsem učitel anglični pro Jiži Schubert… jo… ..jo,’ get buzzed through, take the lift upstairs, wait at the reception area for ten minutes while the reception woman tries to get hold of Jitka (Jiži), get told that he is on holiday / in a meeting all morning / otherwise indisposed, go home to bed. For this charade I get paid 400 korun.
I was especially glad there was no angliční konversace lesson to teach this morning because I only had 2 hours sleep. I went to bed at 11 like a good boy, lay there, listened to the radio… just wasn’t tired or sleepy. I am now though.

Postscript: I (B3TA) have found the greatest website in the world – http://www.mingthemerciless.com – just keep clicking at it.

You might remember how two entries ago I was telling you about how I was at a karaoke night at a sports bar called Legends last Friday. Well, the news is that I found out yesterday that just after I left some Norwegian guy got kicked to death on the floor for no reason whatsoever. You can read about it here. My friend Gail has spent the last two days helping out with his friends, parents, the police, etc. I was pretty shocked when I heard all this and as I happened to be in a club at the time it put a dark shade on last night. To think that one night you go out as a tourist in a new city, walk into a shitty overpriced sports bar on karaoke night and get kicked… then, nothing. Your whole life over. What a stupid thing to happen.

Update – The Post finally has some information about it: http://www.praguepost.com/P03/2003/Art/0717/news4.php

Days like today I remember why I’m in Prague. You can lie in the park in the sun with an amazing view and very reasonably priced very good beer.
On the other hand I have to go to the dentist soon and I don’t think the diagnosis is going to be good. One of my wisdom teeth seems to have gone bad and I think I may have to have it pulled out. At best. I haven’t been to the dentist for a good 5 years now and recently heard that my regular one in England has died. So… what to do? Let it fester and ache? Take somebody else’s penicillin? Go to the dentist and fork out money I can’t afford meanwhile having to go through a great deal of pain, etc? I’m tempted to postpone until I get back to England, however many years away that might be.
Anyway, that’s all.

Just a quick note…

I have been going to unusual places these last few days. First Hanna took me to a salsa dancing club with wildly gyrating couples, then yesterday I went to an appalling disneyland (old town) sports bar called Legends to watch Gail sing karaoke. But I skipped out of the Roxy as I really am now in pretty dire financial straits to coin a phrase. Nevertheless, I’m now off to Kino Aero to see the new Lars Von Trier film, Dogville. Ta ta.

As I probably have said before, the weather here in the summer is generally given to only operating in the extremes. Either there is a heat wave or a thunderstorm. Yesterday the latter was taking place, unfortunately. I say unfortunately because we were standing outside under a small awning watching Freak Parade perform on an entirely inadequately covered stage while the torrent poured over their monitors and effects pedals. They fucking rock and didn’t get electrocuted, surprisingly. They even did an encore while people danced around in the rain.
After that we went to the Roxy, which was free, but I was still feeling a bit sick so I went home.
In house news Bob has gone forever with Russ moving into his room, whilst Hamish and Bea have shipped off to Holland for a month to pick flowers and live in a tent (sounds like fun) so Finnish Hanna has moved into their room for the meantime and I have today cut her hair and cleaned all the floors, like a good boy.
Carrie and Swedish Hanna have already gone back to their native lands, for a bit.

So, briefly updating this before we go to see Bob off. As I said before, everyone seems to be leaving. Russ is taking his room though, so we’re alright for rent.
Today I have been mainly giving businesspeople exams, which involves me giving them a piece of paper, sitting there twiddling my thumbs for an hour and then telling them the answers, chatting to them about what they’re going to be doing this summer, etcetera. Pretty sweet work right now.
Also I hope there will soon be a plethora of new pictures on this site (the http://www.lastnightadjkilledmydog.co.uk one) by me and by Bea.
Oh, and the lovely people on the B3TA messageboard did these for me:

it's funny cos it's true

as is this

…but the result of this test has proved to be a complete and utter lie:

i am open-minded!

How indie are you?
test by ridethefader

You’re pretty knowledgeable about music in general. You like indie music, sure, but that’s only part of it. You’ll listen to any old shit as long as it sounds good to you. You’re not snobby about music at all, you just like what you like. How boring. Curiously, this makes you popular with the opposite sex.
