It’s a hot hot day.
I haven’t been really taking advantage, though I should’ve been.
Just too hot.
Well, at least the summer is here at last.
Just now on the tram I had a mildly unfortunate journey. A stop after I got on a beautiful seventeen year-old girl wearing a short short skirt came and sat opposite me while her grouchy mother sat behind her and scowled at me whenever I looking in the direction of her daughter. I had to spend the entire journey not looking forward for fear of being beaten up by the monobrowed old hag. It really isn’t fair that I should feel like a sex offender for sitting on the tram and minding my own business.

Friday was stupid. I know all I do is drink but I’m the one who practices moderation I’d say. Lots of pico and stuff going round. I was good, I only had the ‘Slivovice Special’ from the unmarked bottle in the secret wine shop, a drink only allowed to the lucky few. Then I had lots of beers, passed out, threw up. Shameful.
I’ve been sick for over a week now, and though I can still work with it I still feel like shit and can’t handle even a little drink right now apparently. It’s my 25th birthday on Friday, I’d better feel better by then.

Went out to a small town a way outside Prague to pay a brief visit to Chelsea & Petra in their cottage yesterday. It was alright – we walked for about a week before getting to a school-hall style bar where youths played table tennis. It was alright, but the party had been the previous night, hence the hangover-fest. To get back to the cottage we had to wade across a weir in the pitch black, the last bit was almost a swim. But we survived.
Today I had some soup and started the journey back. It was a pain. Today is Bob’s birthday, though, so much more drinking for sure.

Hm well.
Jeremiah’s art opening at the Roxy yesterday, then down to the usual two bars I frequent to get hammered and return to bed.
Hm.
Today, don’t feel so good.

Whatever Happened To…?

Nothing interesting is going on right now so I thought I’d take a break from my own goings on and give a brief update of (what I know of) the lives of those people previously featured in this journal. Not in any way gossip.

Amanda is back in Norway, working with kids I think, but not for long.
Bea is back in New Zealand, studying.
Bob is still at the C&B, but now making pizza and goulash in Arena Hostel.
Bodil just went back to Sweden after a year and a half in the Joshua Tree.
Carrie is back in Chicago, with a boyfriend and stuff.
Chandler is somewhere in South America playing beach volleyball.
Chelsea is doing alright, back to her old self.
Chrissy has gone to Crete for the summer.
David (Gayvid) just went back to the US.
Gail until recently was the host of the second-highest-rated radio show in the city, and she’s also national karaoke champion.
Hamish is still in Prague, but now with a job, flat, girlfriend, etc.
Hanna (Finnish) is working in a social security office and coming back to Prague! Maybe.
Hanna (Swedish) & Atot have apparently split up, but are both still in Spain.
Ivana is supposedly still in Prague but always is away on the continent somewhere.
Jacques is moving to a flat of his own, rumour has it.
Jan is studying law in Germany.
Johnny has gone back to Ireland for a while to fix up his house.
Jussi is working at the C&B, and is a porn star, alegedly.
Lara is doing some teacher training stuff in Canada.
Linn is back in Sweden, running a bar and pregnant.
Lisa is back in the UK, but off on a world tour soon.
Lori is off in the US and a great photographer type. Buy her prints!
Michelle is still in Prague and unable to escape for a few months. Cleaning stuff & cutting hair.
Miriam is back in Norway, working with kids too (what is it with these Scandinavians?)
Natalie has disappeared off the face of the earth.
Russ is back in England, doing rubbish work. Gets to see the football, though.
Tim went back to Eire a few months back.
Vicky & Marcus are married, possibly, in Prague, maybe. Not too social of late.

…and nobody else comes to mind right now. If anyone has any comments, corrections, clarifications, omissions, etc, click here and I will endeavour to update.

A quieter weekend, spent cleaning, sewing and otherwise in the fashion of a workhouse woman.
Saturday I went to hang out with Lucie, who’s back in town. Hamish and Wendy came along too. We hung around her flat drinking wine, which is a good way to spend an afternoon I’d say. She’s been in America for the last year having all manner of horrific experiences. We planned some more mass walks in the countryside, next weekend, maybe.
But first a week of new students. And money.

I’ve watched so much Simpsons of late that I’m starting to have premonitions of the episodes prior to watching them. Today I was listening to the news and started to think about two wrongs not equaling a right for some reason. Then I though of that time Lisa says “funny how sometimes two wrongs do make a right” which hasn’t got anything to do with anything, has it? It just popped into my head.
I didn’t think twice about it until I put a video into the machine fifteen minutes later and… guess what episode it happened to be? This was a bit odd the first time it happened, but this must be about the 50th time. It leads me to three conclusions;
1. I’m watching way too much Simpsons.
2. That doesn’t really satisfactorily explain it.
3. I have a psychic Simpsons link.
Hm.
Had a new student today, and more next week, so hopefully some normal activity will stop me from going any more insane.

Since waking this morning with a throat almost closed dry from infection and dubious mucus, the colour of which I am fortunately unable to see, I have had a constant stream of people phoning me up and asking me to teach them English. I’m really not sure why today was the day of choice, perhaps it’s “phone a new English teacher” day and nobody told me, but all I know is that I appear to have three more students than I did yesterday, despite me being unable to speak properly. And them not being able to speak English very well. And the phone reception in Horni Pocernice being only marginally better than it would be if I made my calls from the bottom of a mineshaft.
This week has been unbelievably lazy. I’ve read 5 books, watched at least 40 episodes of the Simpsons and a listened to a lot of world service news. Next week I have students, therefore money, therefore social life. Sweet sweet sweet.
I just thought of an idea for a book too, but will tell nobody about it until it is finished, maybe not even then.

So hot I can hardly breathe.

I’m lying on my bed this afternoon, reading. In the last 48 hours I’ve read Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall by Spike Milligan, So the Wind Won’t Blow It All Away by Richard Brautigan, Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto and Junky by William Burroughs. In the previous month or so I only managed to read The Good Soldier Svejk and His Fortunes in the World War by Jaroslav Hasek. But now I have nothing to do but read, it being yet another public holiday over here, this time Jan Hus day.
Lying on the bed reading is good, though. No music or radio due to no batteries, but there is the constant sound of barking dogs outside. Across the road there are two terriers that go into a frenzy whenever they see another of their species, which works out as every three minutes or so as the entire population of the town seem to be out on a mid-afternoon dog-walk.
A few moments ago I saw a man go over to the fence and look the dog in the eye. It slunk to the ground and cowered until he was out of sight. What a shit dog. Still, it is a sound I have finally got used to and find a little less annoying. Or at least I would if I was really lying on my bed and not sitting in an internet cafe typing this.
But what are you gonna do?
