Furious entry

A more than tiring day at work today. Every time a call ended there was a two second space while I got up what I was reading, then *ping* incoming call. Every time I had to stop myself saying “leave me alone. I don’t care about your fucking problems.” But managed to just about restrain myself. Everyone was angry, too, plus nobody I know was in.
Came home to watch the news, but had to turn it off in frustration. This election campaign is driving me crazy. I can’t wait to get away from this ridiculously parochial country again, especially after sitting through hours of supposed “debate” about immigration that would’ve been correctly dismissed as far right propaganda ten years ago. There’s this new consensus that there’s a huge immigration “problem” in the country, though how it manifests itself nobody’s clear about. People have even begun to use the phrase “asylum seeker” in a pejorative way, which is beyond disgusting. I could put up with it all if somebody was pointing out how stupid the whole issue is, but everyone’s keeping quiet right now since the country was taken over by Rupert Murdoch and the Daily Mail. Surely this is a human interest story? Where are the people being deported to face torture and death on the TV? Nobody is interested in that, apparently. Nobody’s interested in how each migrant adds to the economy by near twice what they take, nor how we have a severe skills shortage, nor how the number of applications has dropped by more than half this year.
Every superpower the world has ever known is the direct result of extensive immigration. Why can’t people live wherever they like, anyway? What’s the problem with that? Why should I care less about someone from Botswana than someone from Brighton? Or someone from Australia or the USA? I don’t hear the Mail complaining about the number of Australian bar staff in London. Could it be because they’re…. white?
I just did some reading up on the subject. Apparently an opinion poll last year suggested the British public believes the UK receives 23% of the world’s refugees. In reality, the entire European Union only accepts 3% of the world’s refugees. That’s how stupid this all is.

Generally furious. But this cheered me up.

Spent most of the weekend working on the new project, which I will be unveiling soon (Friday is the best estimate) and not much else really. Keep ’em peeled.

Another day sitting at a desk with my headset on, vaguely aware that I’m speaking to members of the public about late payment charges. Today is ‘dress down Friday’ so at least there are ladies in flattering clothes to secretly gawp at. And, as every Friday, there is “Temps’ Lunch” at Office Angels. As ever I pick up some food (bagels) and my payslip (always surprisingly small) and sit down to eat the former and study the latter to discover the secret code. As always, there are other people there chatting, new temps who still find the job in some way interesting. I feel like I should chat to them for some reason, but really don’t want to speak to anybody if possible. It’s something that happens when your job consists of chatting to people and pretending to be friendly all day – for lunch you just want to speak to as few people as possible. Why should I be friendly anyway? Not like there’s a law, and not like I’m actually being hostile anyway. Bah, I don’t need excuses.
After food I listen to Michael Howard not getting the roasting he deserves on Radio 4, then get back to the office with 15 minutes of break left, which equals one cup of machine tea and two strawberry and kiwi flavour sparkling water.

Seem to have done nothing constructive all day. This internet thing is a curse, isn’t it?

Didn’t get much sleep last night as everyone came back one at a time to put on various music and each time I had to go downstairs and ask nicely. Work was overtime so nobody was there to chat to from my shift, and the first call was some furious guy who wanted us to stop sending him credit card cheques. The funny thing was that he was too furious to answer security questions, so I couldn’t do anything for him. What an idiot.
Nevertheless, was an alright day. Went swimming again at lunchtime and managed a little better this time, though I still have a feeling the lifeguard is laughing at me for some reason.
Afternoon was much the same until I got landed with an hour-long call, but that was ok too.
Day off tomorrow so can stay up downloading stuff.

Began the day by bolting awake two minutes before my alarm was due to go off – a sure sign that routine is taking over my life if I ever saw one. Then had breakfast, went to work, blah blah, bah. The one innovation in my day was my lunch break, where I decided to go to the swimming pool next to the office and get some exercise for once. It was three pounds twenty for a quick swim and the place wasn’t exactly Mount Splashmore. First I had to swallow my self consciousness and get changed moreorless in public. Thankfully the shorts I bought yesterday weren’t as embarrassing as I had previously imagined, though they still didn’t leave much to the imagination. I spent five minutes navigating my way around the locker maze, couldn’t be bothered to have a shower, and eventually found the pool. It was at this point that I realised I hadn’t swam (swum?) in a good six years or so and had half forgotten how to do it. But I picked it up pretty quickly. Everyone else looked like they knew what they were doing, so I soon remembered the bit about keeping your head still while doing front crawl. Otherwise I suppose it would be called clumsily swaying from side to side crawl. I lost my key at the bottom twice, then secured it as hard as I could. Didn’t want to have to walk back in my shorts like that guy on ‘The Day Today’.
After 14 or so lengths I was so tired I could barely haul myself out of the pool. Work needs to be done. Felt great answering calls for about half an hour, though, then remembered how much I hate the place.

Spent most of Friday and Saturday either working or on the net, leaving about seven hours for sleep instead of the usual sixteen. Caught up on Sunday by sleeping in til 3.30, something I was hoping I’d grown out of, but no luck there. Spent the rest of the day drowsy and with a headache, unable to wake up properly at all. Went round to Duncan and Amelia’s in the evening and watched TV, was alright. The girls went out for the evening, and I stayed up until 2.30, downloading some TV show or other. Had to go to bed sharpish when around 15 very drunk people arrived and started having a party in the kitchen. Too antisocial to talk to anyone, and feel weird trying to talk to drunk people when I’m sober and tired.
Then today was much the usual kind of Monday thing really. Everyone saves up their banking business for Monday so every week we get a deluge despite having every desk in the building occupied. At one point there were nearly a hundred people in the queue. Took lunch aside to get some swimming stuff – I plan to start going to the pool next door to the office as I’m developing a bit of a beer belly and don’t really get any exercise.
This evening we watched some Spaced and ‘Young Adam’.
Oh, and… found my old friend Dan on the ‘net just now – http://www.viceland.com/issues_uk/v3n3/htdocs/cabin.php – glad to see him up to stuff again.

After an epic struggle we now have broadband in our house. I’ve been staring at the screen for about ten hours, and am now struggling to find something to entertain me further. Bit torrent is the best discovery. I know I’m coming to this all a bit late…

So, the pope died, which was cool in that it mean my mum’s cousin was on the news.

There he is on the left. Maybe he’ll be made pope now. Or Robbie Coltrane or something. Maybe they should just quit it with the popes, I mean we must have had enough now, the whole ‘pope’ thing is getting a little past it surely? Or maybe….

Nothing new is happening in Brighton, meanwhile, just a new Subway opening opposite the old one. I hate Subway and they have the worst advert on TV right now, and considering that most adverts make me want to burn my eyes out that makes it pretty fucking bad.
