50 songs from last year – #32 – Flying Lotus – Never Catch Me ft. Kendrick Lamar
Someone on the internet called this “Dad music” – and you can sort of see what they mean, until you get to the instrumental break at 3.20. Dailymotion link again for silly geographical rights reasons.
50 songs from last year – #33 – Sébastien Tellier – L’adulte
Every time I listen to a new Sébastien Tellier song I have to get over it not being as good as La Ritournelle. They usually turn out to be pretty good in their own right, of course.
50 songs from last year – #34 – Mr Little Jeans – Good Mistake
Trends this year: * Band names with ‘Mr’ * Music videos with big trucks * Awesome synths
50 songs from last year – #35 – Archie Bronson Outfit – In White Relief
Um, not much to say about this one. Love the sax solo two minutes in. Cheers again Duncan!
50 songs from last year – #36 – Prince – U Know
This sounds like Prince would if he were still making good music. Oh wait… Actually it will probably sound like silence because Prince hates the internet and the other copies on youtube are already muted.
50 songs from last year – #37 – Mac DeMarco – Chamber of Reflection
Apparently Wiz Khalifa has just sampled this and lots of people on Youtube are angry. Apparently the official video audio is at 1.5x speed, which is a bit weird. /research
50 songs from last year – #38 – Kane West – Gameset
* This sounds like the demos that came with PC Format magazine’s coverdisk in 1991. * Nobody else in the world seems to be digging that particular seam * Calling himself Kane West and using this LP cover is top … Continue reading
50 songs from last year – #39 – The War on Drugs – Red Eyes
One of a couple of groups who have suddenly got huge without doing anything particularly different. Does that mean it was a weak year? This doesn’t sound like the future, but it’s still very good.
50 songs from last year – #40 – Sam Smith – Money On My Mind
Again, not 100% sold on Sam Smith, but love the production on this one.
50 songs from last year – #41 – Perfume Genius – Fool
Not really sold on Mr Genius previously, and the track in all the 2014 lists (“Queen”) doesn’t do much for me either. This, however, is incredible. Why didn’t I put it higher?
